River Hawks Wrap Up Non-Conference Slate at Massachusetts

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team will wrap up its non-conference schedule on the road, as the River Hawks take on the Massachusetts Minutewomen on December 30 at 7 p.m.

Looking at the River Hawks
The River Hawks entered their last game at Boston College riding a two-game winning streak and held a 30-26 halftime lead, but the Eagles outscored the River Hawks 40-25 in the second half to earn a 66-55 win. Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) scored a game-high 13 points with two three-pointers. Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) added 12 points, and Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) chipped in 10. Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) and Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) dished out three assists each, and Doucette recorded two blocks.

Leading the Flock
The UMass Lowell offense is led by a trio of players averaging double-digits this season, Doucette is leading the way with 13.7 points, and snagging 9.5 rebounds per game. Gibbs is scoring 13.4 points per game with 8.3 rebounds, while Mitchell-Owens is scoring 10.2 points. Frase leads the team with 26 assists to facilitate the offense, and Mitchell-Owens has 18 made threes. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has eight blocks, and Frase adds 14 steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 251-of-647 (38.8%) from the field and 32.8 percent (62-189) from three-point range.

Scouting Massachusetts
Massachusetts enters Wednesday's contest 5-6, thanks to a pair of home wins last week. The Minutewomen ended a two-game skid, topping Boston University, 73-56, on Dec. 19, and defeating Hartford, 63-57, on Dec. 22. Freshman Bria Stallworth leads the team with 13.1 points per game and 38 rebounds, while sitting second with 16 steals.  Sophomore Cierra Dillard is first on the squad, tallying 23 steals, while posting a second best 12.5 points per game and 33 assists. Defensively, senior Rashida Timbilla leads the Minutewomen with 10 blocks, while pulling in 9.1 rebounds per game. As a team, Massachusetts is averaging 63.4 points, while shooting 45.0 percent (252-625) from the field, including 30.3 percent (40-132) from down town. The squad is pulling in 35.1 boards per game, and has recorded 90 steals and 33 blocks so far this season

Series History
This is the first meeting of the two schools in the all-time series.

Always a Threat from Deep
As a unit, the River Hawks led the league shooting 32.8 percent from downtown, and are third averaging 5.6 makes per game. Last season, UMass Lowell led the league in three-point shooting with a 33.2 3FG% and averaged 6.8 makes per game.

Balling in the America East
With some America East teams in action on Tuesday, the River Hawks lead the conference with a .750 free throw percentage, and sit in second averaging 62.7 points and 13.4 offensive rebounds per game. The team ranks fourth in the conference with 12.1 assists per game, and fifth in rebounding margin (+0.7).

Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) made her debut at Fairleigh Dickinson and scored eight points … Doucette's 17 rebounds against FIU is the second-best single game performance in the America East this season … Nazarae Butler (Columbus, Ohio) and Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made first collegiate starts at Rhode Island … Frase snagged her 100th and 101st career rebounds against Columbia … Butler and Smith made their collegiate debuts against No. 6 Maryland.
