Junior G Brian Hamor scored a career-high 30 points and dished five assists as Stonehill College defeated UMass Lowell, 69-35, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.
The loss halted a seven-game winning streak for the River Hawks, who slipped to 16-6 overall and 12-6 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's game at Merrimack (3:00).
Stonehill improved to 15-7 overall and 12-6 in the Conference and host Saint Michael's Saturday at 3:30.
Senior G Dipanjot Singh (Evanston, Ill.) led UMass Lowell with eight points and played only 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
Hamor converted 9 of 16 field goal attempts, including 7-12 from 3-point range while freshman F Jack Cole chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Stonehill forced UMass Lowell into 19 turnovers while committing 14. The advantaged led to Stonehill's 27-15 scoring edge in points off turnovers.
Stonehill also had significant advantages from 3-point range (36-9) and the free throw line (15-6).
UMass Lowell never found its shooting touch, struggling to a .255 clip (13-51) while Stonehill shot .404 (21-52).
“When you shoot 25 percent for the game and play against a team like Stonehill who was clicking on all cylinders, that is not a good combination,” said head coach Greg Herenda. “We have been playing very good basketball and had two great practices prior to tonight. “It was just one of those rare nights when absolutely nothing went right for us,” he added.
The Skyhawks ended the first half with a decisive 24-4 run which enabled them to post a 31-15 lead at the break. Hamor led the run with 15 points while junior G Adam Fazzini scored all eight of his points in the run.
Stonehill maintained the pressure in the second half and opened the half with a 23-4 spurt to grab a 54-19 lead with 10:50 to play, from which the River Hawks were unable to recover.
“I know that my guys will bounce back,” Herenda added. “We will go back to practice tomorrow and go back to work and get ready for Merrimack.”
