(1983) Behind every outstanding varsity athletic program stands an administrator whose contributions to the overall successes of that program often go unnoticed.

During his stay at the University of Lowell as president, Dr. John B. Duff made contributions to the athletic program that has allowed the University to gain and maintain national recognition.

While serving as president, Dr. Duff provided the scholarship programs that has been the foundation for the successes achieved by all ULowell teams. This scholarship program has made it possible for the University to be represented by 25 NCAA All-Americans and to compete at a national level in bowling, men's cross country, field hockey, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, men's track and field, and wrestling. He added significantly to the morale of the competing teams by attending many games and personally congratulating the players on their accomplishments.

A 1953 graduate of Fordham University, Dr. Duff received his master's degree from Seton Hall in 1958 and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1964. He came to ULowell in April 1976 to become president of the school after working at Seton Hall in various teaching and administrative capacities for 16 years. He left ULowell in May, 1981 to become the first Chancellor of the Board of Regents of Higher Education in Massachusetts.
