(1996) - Bernie Shapiro was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions to the growth of intercollegiate athletics at UMass Lowell for the over 40 years.
A member of the University's faculty since 1962 in the mathematics department, Shapiro was captain of the Lowell Tech lacrosse team during his senior year of 1956 and once again helped that program gain varsity status in 1970.
In 1971, Bernie became the chair of the University Athletic Committee, a position he held until 1986, and has served on various committees, including the Athletic Council, Hall of Fame Selection Committee and the Athletic Commission.
