LOWELL, MA (Dec. 18, 2007) – UMass Lowell junior Matias Pietropinto (Leominster, MA) and senior Edens Chery (Brockton, MA), named as All-Americans Monday, highlighted the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II All-New England Region Team, released Tuesday.

Pietropinto and Chery, who each split time between forward and attacking midfielder, were named to the First Team while sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) and junior forward Matt Dubois (Dracut, MA) were cited to the Second Team.

The honor marked the second appearance on the New England Region squad for Pietropinto, who was named to the 2005 First Team as a freshman.

UML posted a 12-4-4 overall record and a 10-2-1 clip in the Northeast-10 Conference, in which it placed second to national champion Franklin Pierce. The River Hawks enjoyed their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five years where it drew (1-1) with Southern Connecticut in the first round before advancing on penalty kicks (3-2).

UML, however, suffered a 3-1 loss in the Northeast Region Final to the Ravens.

Pietropinto registered four goals and a school record 13 assists (21 points) this fall, which ranked first among NE-10 assist leaders and third among Division II leaders. Pietropinto bested the previous school record of 12 set by Michael Cafeteiro in 2004.

Pietropinto stood out in crucial matches, dishing out four assists in UML’s regular season wins over then-No. 1 Dowling (3-2) and Southern Connecticut (1-0) and the 3-1 loss to FPU in the NCAA Tournament.

The team’s lone senior, Chery enjoyed his best season and compiled a career-best seven goals and five assists. He ended his collegiate career with 12 goals and 21 assists (45 points) which ranks tied for ninth among UML career leaders.

Richards is fresh off another outstanding season, in which he posted a 0.82 goals against average and a .754 save rate while compiling six shutouts. He was prominent among NE-10 leaders this season, ranking fourth among goals against average leaders and fourth in shutouts.

Richards, perhaps, was at his best in UML’s 1-1 draw with Southern Connecticut in the NCAA Tournament first round as he had three saves in regulation and overtime and thwarted three penalty kicks to enable UML to advance to the second round.

Dubois, who transferred to UML after two years at Merrimack, made an immediate impact and led the River Hawks in scoring with 12 goals and one assist (25 points). He also finished the year among Conference leaders, ranking tied for first in game winning goals (seven), third in goals and fourth in points.

Dubois highlighted the year with a hat trick in a 6-1 victory at American International College.
