Frank Stegnar named a Hockey East Top Scholar-Athlete
LOWELL, Mass. (June 6, 2008) – Frank Stegnar (Toronto, Ont.), named a Hockey East Top Scholar-Athlete, was one 13 UMass Lowell hockey players who achieved Hockey East All-Academic Team honors, the league announced Friday.
The honors mark the fourth straight year the River Hawks have had at least 11 players named to the All-Academic Team. This year’s total is the second most behind Maine, which had 16 players make the list.
Student-athletes who earn a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in each of the two academic semesters in which they competed receive all-academic honors.
In addition to making the All-Academic Team for the second straight year, Stegnar was named to the league’s Academic All-Star Team. He was one of three players to be named Hockey East’s Top Scholar-Athlete with a 4.0 GPA. Brad Flaishans of New Hampshire and Chris Hahn of Maine were the others.
Junior Mark Roebothan (St. John’s, Nfld.) made the list for the third time in three years. Roebothan, an Academic All-Star as a freshman, maintained a 3.44 GPA in his junior season. He posted a career-best 23 points on 14 goals and nine assists in 37 games in 2007-08.
In addition to Stegnar, junior Nick Monroe (Groton, Mass.), along with sophomores Barry Goers (Ivyland, Pa.), Tommy Powers (Coral Springs, Fla.), Ian Schaser (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Paul Worthington (Langhorne, Pa.) also made the list for the second time.
Goers maintained a 3.67 GPA as a business management major. He led the River Hawks and ranked tied for second in Hockey East in defense scoring. He had 24 points on four goals and 20 assists in 37 games.
Sophomores Jeremy Dehner (Madison, Wis.), Carter Hutton (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Jonathan Maniff (Revere, Mass.), and freshman Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.), Jason DeLuca (East Moriches, N.Y.) and Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alta.) made the list for the first time.
Edwards had a 3.27 GPA as a freshman business major. The freshman blue liner made the Hockey East All-Rookie team in 2007-08. He led UML rookies in scoring with 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists) and was tied for 11th in defense scoring in the league.
The River Hawks finished the 2007-08 season 16-17-4 overall and 10-13-4 in Hockey East play. The 16 wins doubled their win total from 2006-07. UML qualified for the Hockey East playoffs this season, finishing seventh in the standings with 24 points.
