LOWELL, MA (May 16, 2008) – Junior Anthony Gallardo (Methuen, MA), who led the UMass Lowell golf team at the NCAA Tournament last week, was named to the NCAA Division II All-Northeast Region Team, released Thursday.
Gallardo, who compiled a spring average of 76.27 over 15 rounds, clinched his spot on the all-region team with his effort at the NCAA Tournament East-Northeast Super Regional last week. Finishing in a tie for sixth among 45 golfers, Gallardo carded a three-round score of 229 (77-75-77) as UML placed sixth in the eight-team field.
The effort at the NCAAs capped a stellar year for Gallardo as he led the River Hawks in five tournaments in the spring and five last fall.
Gallardo highlighted the spring with a 74-74—148 showing at the Goldey-Beacom Invitational on Mar. 31, which earned him Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week honors.
Gallardo shot in the 70s in 14 of 15 rounds over the spring season.
The all-region award is one of several for Gallardo this year. He placed second (by two strokes) at the Northeast-10 Championship with a 75-73—148 and led UML to seventh place in the team standings.
On Tuesday night at UML’s Athletic Awards Night, Gallardo received the Student-Athlete of the Year Award for the golf team. A business major, Gallardo has maintained a 3.27 grade point average.
A graduate of Central Catholic H.S., Gallardo is the son of Tony and Anne Marie Gallardo of Methuen, MA.
