Eleven River Hawks Earn All-New England Honors; LeFort Shatters Shot Put Record
DURHAM, NH (May 10, 2008) – Senior Terry Young (Mansfield, MA) and sophomore Robert Liekweg (Salem, NH) were among three UMass Lowell athletes to earn All-New England honors multiple times Saturday at the New England Championship at the University of New Hampshire’s Atkins Track.
The UML men compiled 42.5 points and placed sixth overall and third among Division II and III colleges.
Young, who earned All-New England honors in the long jump Friday (22 feet, 9.5 inches), and Liekweg were two of 11 UML athletes who earned All-New England honors. The top eight scorers in each event earn All-New England status.
Liekweg placed second in the 400 meter hurdles in 53.24 seconds and also ran a 10.93-second leg on UML’s 4X100 meter relay team which placed fifth in 42.97 seconds.
Joining Liekweg was Young, who ran a 10.16 split; senior Bryan Koenig (Reading, MA), who ran his leg in 11.42; and freshman Sam Bastien (Canton, MA), who ran a 10.34 split.
Bastien capped UML’s dual All-New England winners as he placed sixth in the 200 meter dash in 22.16 seconds.
In the men’s shot put, senior Rocky LeFort (Nashua, NH) placed fourth overall (second among II-III throwers) and shattered the school record with a throw of 53’ 0.75’’. LeFort’s effort bested the previous mark of 51’ 7.0’’ achieved by former standout Mike Davis in 2007.
Freshman Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) took eighth in the shot put with a toss of 50’ 2.5’’.
Sophomore Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA) highlighted UML’s distance runners as he placed sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:27.77. Senior Joey DeWitt (Ellsworth, ME) earned All-New England honors for the seventh time in his career as he took sixth in the 1,500 meters in 3:54.33.
On Friday, junior Rex Radloff (Dedham, MA) led UML’s effort as he placed second in the 5,000 meters (14:23.31) while senior Ruben Sanca (Boston, MA) placed seventh (14:51.13).
Junior Jason DeDonato (Nashua, NH) also earned All-New England, placing seventh in the 10,000 meters (31:19.23).
UML competes at the IC4A Championship Friday through Sunday at Princeton University.
