LOWELL, MA (May 8, 2008) – Senior Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) was one of three UMass Lowell softball players to earn postseason regional and academic honors on Thursday.
Brodie was named to both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Northeast Region Team, voted upon by the Region’s coaches; and to the ESPN The Magazine District I All-Academic Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Seniors Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) and Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) were both named to the Daktronics All-Northeast Region Team, voted on by the Region’s sports information directors.
The UML softball team capped the 2008 season with a 24-25 overall record, including a 17-11 clip in the Northeast-10 Conference (tied for third). The River Hawks ended the season last Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Pace University in the NE-10 Tournament first round.
The honors are the latest of several for UML’s senior trio, each of whom was named to the NE-10 All-Conference Teams last week: Tanguay to the First Team and Brodie and Guanci to the Third Team.
A three-time NE-10 all-star, Brodie makes her first appearance on the NFCA All-Northeast Region Team as she batted .312 with a team-high 36 runs and a sterling .973 fielding percentage as she rotated between catcher and second base.
Brodie has also been a star in the classroom with a 3.896 in health education and makes her second appearance on the ESPN The Magazine team. Earlier this season, Brodie earned her third appearance on the NE-10 All-Academic Softball Team and was also the recipient of the National Student-Athlete Day Award for having the highest grade point average on the softball team, for the third successive year.
Tanguay and Guanci each enjoyed stellar seasons and ranked as UML’s top two offensive threats.
A four-time NE-10 all-star, Tanguay batted a team-high .374 and also led the River Hawks in RBI (42, tying the school record), slugging (.581), doubles (14) and triples (three). She also scored 35 runs and ranked among NE-10 leaders in seven categories.
Guanci, who made her second straight appearance on the NE-10 all-star team a week ago, batted .342 and shared the team lead in home runs (seven). She also compiled big numbers in runs (35), RBI (30), doubles (10) and slugging (.551).
The UML softball team is expected to return 14 players and six starters for the 2009 season.
