Tanguay, Lajoie Named to First Team; Brodie, Guanci Third Team
LOWELL, MA (May 5, 2008) – Senior Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) and junior Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) led four UMass Lowell softball players named to the Northeast-10 Conference All-Star Teams, released Monday.
Tanguay and Lajoie were each named to the First Team while seniors Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) and Jachael Guanci (Everett, MA) were cited to the Third Team.
The River Hawks posted a 24-25 overall record and a 17-11 clip in the NE-10 (tied for third) this season. With the No. 4 seed in the NE-10 Tournament, UML capped the year Saturday with a 2-1 eight-inning loss to Pace University in the first round.
For Tanguay, the honor marks a rare fourth appearance on the NE-10 all-star teams while Brodie and Lajoie were named for the third straight year and Guanci a second time.
A two-time First Team honoree, Tanguay led the River Hawks in several categories, including batting (.374), RBI (42) and slugging (.581) and became UML’s all-time leader in home runs (19) and RBI (127) and also tied the single season RBI mark.
Tanguay was also prominent among NE-10 leaders, ranking in seven categories including RBI (third), doubles (fourth, 14), runs (seventh, 35) and home runs (11th), among others.
Lajoie, who alternated between catcher and centerfield, also enjoyed a stellar year as she batted .336 and shared the team lead in home runs with seven and drew a team-high 14 walks. Additionally, she compiled 27 RBI and 31 runs and stole nine bases in 11 attempts.
The 2006 NE-10 Freshman of the Year and third team standout in 2007, Lajoie was prominent among NE-10 leaders this year, ranking in home runs (fifth), slugging rate (seventh, .550) and on-base percentage (11th, .394).
Brodie, who played both catcher and second base, batted .312 this season and led UML in runs (36) and also fielded at a .973 rate. A Third Team standout in 2006 and Second Team recipient in 2007, Brodie was among NE-10 leaders in both sacrifice bunts (first, 16) and runs (sixth, 36).
A Third Team standout last season, Guanci ranked among the Conference’s best power hitters as she batted .342 with 30 RBI, 35 runs and shared the team home run lead with Lajoie with seven.
Among the conference leaders, Guanci ranked highly in several categories, including runs (eighth), slugging (10th, .551), home runs (12th) and total bases (12th, 87).
