Track & Field: Young, Lapachinski, Barrett Highlight NE-10 Weekly Honors
UML Trio Among 12 Winners at George Davis Invitational

LOWELL, MA (Apr. 15, 2008) – Senior Terry Young (Mansfield, MA) and sophomore Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA) were named the track and field athletes of the week while Jenna Lapachinski (Turners Falls, MA) was named the freshman athlete of the week, the Northeast-10 Conference announced Monday.

The UMass Lowell trio was among 12 athletes who won events Saturday at the UML George Davis Invitational.

Young captured two events, including the long jump with a distance of 23 feet, 8.25 inches, in which he provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship – ranking fifth in the country – and came a mere 0.5 inches from the meet and facility record.

Young also won the triple jump with a leap of 43’ 11.75’’.

Barrett earned her third straight shot put title in as many weeks with a throw of 44’ 7.5’’. She also placed third in the discus with a throw of 99’ 5.0’’.

Lapachinski, named the NE-10 freshman Athlete of the Week for the second straight week, won two events including the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.89. She also ran a leg on UML’s 4X400 meter relay team which placed first in 4:18.25.

Four River Hawks were named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll, led by junior Andrew Grange (Methuen, MA) who won the 400 meter dash and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in his first action of the outdoor season in 47.99.

Grange also ran a split on UML’s 4X400 meter relay team which took first in 3:28.49.

Senior Tristin Johnson (Pittsfield, MA) was also cited as she led both the 4X100 and 4X400 relay teams to first place. The 4X100 team posted a time of 48.92 seconds while the 4X400 team finished in 4:18.25.

Junior Rex Radloff (Dedham, MA) won the two-mile and set both a meet and facility record with a time of 9:03.85, besting the previous mark of 9:19.63 by more than 15 seconds.

Sophomore Haley Catarius (Marshfield, MA) earned NE-10 plaudits as she won the 800 meters in 2:18.63.

The UML men and women enter the Larry Ellis Invitational Friday and Saturday at Princeton University.
