Track & Field: Rafael, Raimondi, Barrett Capture NE-10 Weekly Honors
Rafael Breaks 100 Meter Dash Record; Barrett Moves Up on Division II List

LOWELL, MA (Apr. 7, 2008) – Johan Rafael (Lawrence, MA) and Lauren Raimondi (East Longmeadow, MA) were named freshman athletes of the week while sophomore Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA) was named the field athlete of the week as the Northeast-10 Conference announced it weekly award winners Monday.

Rafael, Raimondi and Barrett were among a combined eight winners for the UMass Lowell men and women’s track and field teams at the Stonehill College Skyhawk Invitational Saturday.

Rafael earned freshman honors for the second straight week as he won the 100 meter dash and set a school record. Rafael posted a time of 10.77 seconds which bested the previous school record of 10.86 seconds set by former standout Lawrence Aidoo in 2006.

Raimondi won the 100 meter hurdles in 15.36 seconds to earn freshman honors for the first time this season.

Barrett captured the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 10 inches – achieving her personal best for the third straight week – and ascended to sixth on the NCAA Championship qualifier list.

Five athletes were named to the Weekly Honor Roll, led by senior Gillian Mundry (Methuen, MA) who won the triple jump (34’ 11.25’’) and placed second in the long jump (17’ 0.0’’). Additionally, freshman Jenna Lapachinski (Turners Falls, MA) was cited as she won the 400 meter hurdles in 1:06.52.

On the men’s side, sophomore Robert Liekweg (Salem, NH) won the 400 hurdles in 53.62 seconds and placed fourth in the javelin with a distance of 156’ 1.0’’.

Senior Rocky LeFort (Nashua, NH) and freshman Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) were named after finishing 1-2 in the shot put. LeFort took first with a throw of 51’ 3.0’’ while Murray was close behind with a distance of 49’ 6.5’’.

UML hosts the George Davis Invitational Saturday while a select group of athletes will run at the Mount San Antonio College relays in Walnut, CA.
